The Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) was founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington to provide a creative outlet for inner city dance artists in South Los Angeles.

Now in its 35th year, LWDT enjoys national and international acclaim.

Lula choreographed James Cameron’s movie, “Avatar” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” movie.

LWDT has danced at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; the New Jersey Performing Arts Center; the Joyce Theater in New York; Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts, Lincoln Center Out of Doors and in China, Kosovo, Mexico, Canada, Germany and Russia.

LWDT performs choreography by Lula Washington, and also by Donald Byrd, Donald McKayle, Christopher Huggins, Rennie Harris, Tamica Washington-Miller, and Gaspard Louis, formerly of Pilolobus.

Lula Washington won the Minerva Award from Maria Shriver and the Keeper of the Flame Award from Delta Sigma Theta sorority – both for her work with her dance company and her work with youth at her dance school which serves 100 underserved youth with year-round, affordable dance training.

In addition, museum docents will be available from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the galleries to answer questions about the art on display.
