People’s Climate March Orange County Event Details

2:00pm: The march will begin at IUCC and proceed up Alton to the intersection with Culver.

The march route is out-and-back, 0.9 miles in each direction.

If you are unable to complete the entire route, you may turn around early and return to the church grounds.

The route follows the sidewalk (marchers must stay on sidewalk) on the north side of Alton and will cross four intersections, two of which have traffic lights.

Marchers must cross with – not against – all traffic lights.

Volunteers will accompany marchers to keep order and provide guidance as necessary.

Please follow the volunteers’ instructions, to ensure everyone’s safety, as well as compliance with the law.

At the intersection of Alton Pkwy and Culver Drive, the march will pause for 10-15 minutes, as time permits.

Irvine Police strongly urge that people gather only on the northeast corner (Alton Athletic Park) and on the southwest corner, diagonally opposite, to display signs.

Those who choose to go to the southwest corner will need to cross both Culver and Alton.

Use extreme caution; traffic is heavy on both of these streets.

The return route to the church will be on the same side of Alton Pkwy (north side).

The march will end around 3:50 p.m. back at the church, where there will be a brief wrap-up speech.

What to Bring and Wear
• Comfortable shoes for walking
• Layered clothing (highs are expected to be in the low 80s)
• Hat
• Sunscreen
• Water in reusable container
• Rally signs (see separate guidelines below for themes and messaging)

People’s Climate March: Guidelines for Signs

General Tips
• 15 in. x 20 in. foam board is a convenient size for carrying and holding up. Foam board is rigid. A sign can be held in one hand, and a marcher can carry several if desired. (Downside: Foam board is not recyclable, so if possible, design your messages so your signs can be reused.)
• Signs with sticks are acceptable, but the sticks are for carrying only, not for pounding into the ground (per Irvine Police Department).
• Few words and large letters are best. Most of our audience will be traveling in their cars along Alton Parkway and Culver Drive.
Tone and Messaging
• Messages may be emphatic, but please keep them respectful, rather than insulting or combative.
• Profanity is strongly discouraged, and will be forbidden if within the power of the organizers. Children will be present.
• This is NOT an anti-Trump rally. Signs specifically insulting Trump and his administration will only attract potential backlash from spectators, endangering public safety. They also distract from the primary theme, which is climate action.
