Laguna Art Museum Presents California Art Award to Artist Peter Alexander Tonight

On September 27, 2014, at an exclusive dinner at the museum, Laguna Art Museum will present the California Art Award to pioneering Light and Space artist Peter Alexander. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to California art. Since the 1960s Alexander has been one of the state’s most consistently inventive, versatile, and intelligent artists. He is recognized nationally and internationally for his mastery of nontraditional sculptural materials, his feeling for subtle effects of light, and the leading role he has played in the quintessentially Californian Light and Space movement. The museum is delighted to pay tribute to one of Southern California’s titans of sculpture and painting and we hope that you will join us in honoring him.

The California Art Award Dinner will be a festive affair. In addition to a special installation of works by Alexander, it will feature a lively cocktail reception, music, a delicious three-course meal courtesy of 24 Carrots, and renowned special guest speakers who will reflect on the artist’s life and career–including contemporary art curator Michael Auping and Alexander’s longtime friend and fellow artist Don Bachardy. Proceeds from the event will enrich the museum’s education and exhibition programs, including free elementary school tours, educational talks and lectures, and important exhibitions of California art.

Kids’ Art Studio

The third Sunday of every month
2:00-4:00 p.m.
Free for museum members, free for non-members with museum admission ($5 & $7)
Museum admission is always free for children 12 years of age and under.
Reservations are not required.
Kids’ Art Studio is a hands-on art-making program offered by Laguna Art Museum on a drop-in basis on the third Sunday of every month between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Children and their families create a piece of art from start to finish, inspired by one of the exhibitions on view in the museum. Art projects are designed for all ages and are supervised by members of the Laguna Art Museum Arts Council. All materials are provided.

“Small Time” is from Joel Surnow, co-creator of 24, steps away from guiding Jack Bauer in saving the country to examine one tiny corner of it in Small Time, his aptly named bigscreen directorial debut, featuring a fine cast that’s logged plenty time on the TV beat. A warm-hearted coming-of-age family drama grafted onto a comic buddy pic, the film focuses on a used-car dealer whose son joins him on the lot after graduating from high school, to the dismay of the ex-wife he still has feelings for.

Laguna Dance Festival Laguna Playhouse Tonight at 7:30pm

A performance with the STARS of dance! See ballerina superstar Lorena Feijoo dance with the extraordinary Vitor Luiz from San Francisco Ballet. The exquisite Misty Copeland of American Ballet Theatre dance with Gonzalo Garcia of New York City Ballet. Complexions Contemporary Ballet Co. Founder and Artist Director, Desmond Richardson performs a dynamic solo, and the company returns to the Playhouse stage presenting Innervisions with music by Stevie Wonder and choreography by Dwight Rhoden, this will surely electrify and entertain. This performance is not to be missed!

For 10 years, the Laguna Dance Festival has been bringing world-class dance to Laguna Beach and Orange County. Laguna Art Museum Presents Live! at the Museum: Ceora Winds
Thursday, September 11 2014 at 7:00-8:00 p.m.
This event is Free for museum members; free for non-members with museum admission ($5.00-$7.00)
Ceora Winds is comprised of Michelle Matsumune (flute), Heather Millette (clarinet), and Christin Webb (bassoon). The trio have played chamber music together for ten years, performing throughout Southern California and across the country. Equally adept at classical standards, jazz arrangements, and everything in between, Ceora Winds brings the joy of true chamber music to the museum’s galleries. The title of the evening’s program is “If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On!” and special guest mezzo-soprano Jenni Brandon will join in to sing a few songs.
Live! at the Museum is an ongoing series of early-evening concerts in the museum’s galleries, a feast of sight and sound. In presenting the series, Laguna Art Museum has partnered with Laguna Beach Live!, an organization cherished by music lovers for its work in bringing performances by top-level, professional musicians to the Laguna Beach community. Not only are the galleries an appropriately beautiful setting in which to experience great music, they also boast fine acoustics. The concerts take place the second Thursday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Tickets will not be available for online purchasing after 4:00 p.m. the day of the concert, but will be available at the museum front desk. Laguna Art Museum Music and Dance Concert Thursday

Laguna Art Museum Presents a Music and Dance Concert this Thursday August 14 2014 at 7:00pm. This event is free for museum members, and free for non-members with museum admission

Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach Live!, and Laguna Dance Festival have joined forces to commission an original music-and-dance piece inspired by a work of art from the museum’s collection. The organizations have worked closely together to embrace the challenge of ekphrasis, the interpretation of a work of art in another art form.

For this performance, choreographer Bernard Gaddis presents a new choreographic work to an original score by composer Alan Chan, both inspired by Lotus Land, a 1967 oil painting by Lee Mullican from Laguna Art Museum’s collection. The dance piece will be previewed in simplified form at the museum on August 14, following a concert of Chan’s composition performed by the Argus Quartet. After the performance, Gaddis, Chan, and representatives from Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach Live!, and Laguna Dance Festival will be present for a discussion with the audience.

The first fully-produced, on-stage performance of Ekphrasis will take place as part of the Laguna Dance Festival Gala Performance on Saturday, September 13. Click here for more information.
