Fire Prevention Week: October 5 – 11, 2014
In partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Laguna Beach Fire Department will be taking part in National Fire Prevention Week, which is being held October 5 – 11. This year’s theme is “working smoke alarms save lives.” The Laguna Beach Fire Department is using the month of October to ensure that all residents in Laguna Beach have smoke alarms that not only function properly but are installed in correct locations. On average, about 60% of fire related deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that were not working properly. The Laguna Beach Fire Department offers the following tips to make sure smoke alarms are maintained and working properly.

1) Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button, and making sure everyone in your home knows their sound.
2) If a smoke alarm “chirps”, indicating a low battery, replace the battery immediately.
3) Replace smoke alarms if they do not respond properly when tested.
4) Never remove or disable a working smoke alarm.

The Laguna Beach Fire Department offers free batteries, installation and smoke alarms for residents of Laguna Beach. These items are intended for property owners of residential properties; not apartment and/or income properties. To participate in the Fire Department program please visit their website at http://www.lagunabeachcity.net/cityhall/fire/fire_prevention/smoke_alarms.asp and complete the “Free Smoke Alarm” sign up form. A representative from the Fire Department will contact you and schedule an appointment to determine how many detectors are needed and install them for you. Please remember, this program is not intended to install detectors in each room, only to provide one on each floor.

Additionally, the Laguna Beach Fire Department will be hosting its annual Open House on Saturday, October 11. The four city fire stations will be open during the day from 11AM to 2PM. Come meet your local firefighters, tour the fire engines and stations, and ask questions on what you can do to keep yourself and your family fire safe this year.
