NO-BURN ALERT: MANDATORY WOOD-BURNING BAN IN EFFECT FOR RESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH COAST AIR BASIN TODAY MONDAY DECEMBER 8 2014

All Indoor and Outdoor Residential Wood Burning Forbidden Due to High Air Pollution Predicted for Monday, December 8 2014.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has issued a residential no-burn alert effective Monday, December 8 2014 for all those living in the South Coast Air Basin, which includes the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County and the Inland Empire.

SCAQMD reminds residents in these areas that burning wood in their fireplaces is prohibited all day today through midnight tonight.

No-burn alerts are mandatory in order to protect public health due to a high concentration of fine particle air pollution forecast for the area.

The no-burn prohibition also applies to manufactured fire logs, such as those made from wax or paper.

Fine particles in wood smoke – also known as particulate matter or PM2.5 – can get deep into the lungs and cause respiratory illnesses, increases in emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

South Coast Basin residents can help reduce the harmful health effects of wood smoke by checking for no-burn alerts using one of the following options before burning wood:

Sign-up to receive e-mail alerts via http://www.AirAlerts.org

Visit http://www.aqmd.gov for daily forecasts and for an interactive no-burn alert map

Call SCAQMD’s 24-hour Check Before You Burn toll-free line at (866) 966-3293.

SCAQMD’s no-burn alerts do not apply to mountain communities above 3,000 feet in elevation, the Coachella Valley and the High Desert.
Homes that rely on wood as a sole source of heat, low-income households and those without natural gas service also are exempt from the requirement. Continue reading “No Burn Alert Today For South OC Beaches : No Wood Burning Today”

SOUTH COAST AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

SMOKE ADVISORY

Valid Saturday, September 13, 2014

A wildland brush fire, named the Silverado Fire, is burning in the Silverado Canyon in the mountains of Orange County, south of the City of Corona in Riverside County. This morning it was reported to be 1600 acres with 10 percent containment. Smoke from the fire is mostly lofting into the atmosphere and visible over portions of Orange County and Riverside County. In locations were the smoke is impacting the surface, air quality will reach unhealthful levels.

Areas of direct smoke impacts and Unhealthy air quality will likely include:
the Saddleback Valley Area (Forecast Area 19);
portions of the Corona/Norco Area (Forecast Area 22);
portions of the Lake Elsonore Area (Forecast Area 25);
portions of the Capistrano Valley Area (Forecast Area 21).

Surrounding areas of Orange and Riverside Counties may reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups level, or higher, depending on continuing fire conditions and wind flows. Onshore sea breeze flows will likely keep smoke from the coastal areas through this afternoon.

Current fire information from the U.S. Forest Service can be found at
http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4105/

In any area impacted by smoke: Everyone should avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion; people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. To avoid worsening the health effects of wildfire smoke, don’t use indoor or outdoor wood-burning appliances, including fireplaces.

The Silverado Canyon Fire has burned over 1600 acres and has displaced area residents. Currently there is a estimated 10% containment. Officials are reassessing evacuations. Yesterday three Firefighters required hospitalization due to heat related injuries. 280 Fire Personnel were on the scene yesterday. More personnel will be added today as they intend to hit it hard today. With the temperatures likely to be in the triple digits and possible lack of wind, firefighters started early today to combat the fire.

Corona Fire Department is stating that “reports say that there was no fire growth overnight and firefighters are making great progress. The US Forest Service, CalFire and other agencies have been working very hard to contain this wildfire.”
Yesterday at approximately 10:30 am The United States Forest Service (USFS) reported that a brush and grass fire began due to unknown origin. The fire began near the 30500 block of Silverado Canyon Road in the Cleveland National Forest. The fire area is in steep mountain slopes with dry vegetation.
The USFS reported that the wildfire was off of Silverado Canyon Road south of Corona. The Road closures are North Main, Indian Truck, Bedford, Maples Springs Road and Santiago Canyon Road between Hwy 241 and Live Oak Canyon Road.
30 homes in the uppermost section of the canyon are under mandatory evacuation. The Orange County Red Cross is reporting the Evacuation Center is located at 3920 E Spring Street in Orange. Pets are not allowed at the Red Cross Shelter. Small animals are to be brought to the OC Animal Shelter at 561 The City Drive in Orange. Large Animal evacuations are available at the OC Fairgrounds. Residents must call (714) 708-1588 before bring a animal.
Last night Orange County Sheriff Department (OCSD) reported that parts of Silverado Canyon had lost power as a result of the fire. Cal Fire is reporting that 130 homes are without power. The Orange County EOC provided safety tips for power outages: Use only battery operated flashlights, unplug computers and TVs, keep fridge doors closed as much as possible, if power is out more than 2 hours, throw away any food with a temperature of more than 40 degrees Farenheit.
OC Parks is reporting that Irvine Regional Park & OC Zoo are closed Sat & Sun. The park is hosting 500-1,000 firefighters & resources fighting the fire.
Yesterday the South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory. Unhealthy air quality was likely in the Capistrano Valley Area. People with health related issues should avoid any vigorous exertion and remain indoors.
Residents seeking information regarding the Silverado Fire should call the Emergency Operation Center Public Information Hotline at (714) 628-7085.
