The Dana Point Ocean Institute hosts a Bioluminescence Cruise tonight, Friday June 12 2015 from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.
The Ocean Institute is located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive.

Year ’round, depending on the phase of the moon – Picture for a moment… drifting in the dark, deep depths of the sea, small “bug-like” organisms called euphasids swarming in the billions.

Now imagine yourself aboard the R/V Sea Explorer off the coast of Dana Point at night.

The bottom of the hull glows as it strikes bioluminescent plankton.

A meter net is deployed into the depths and captures thousands of these drifting euphasids.

As our scientists pull the net aboard, it’s with delight that you discover euphasids glow in the dark!
And that’s not all that glows.

There’s a luminous underwater world just waiting to shine!

Learn about the remarkable ability of some marine animals to glow in the dark and witness this curiously beautiful phenomenon.
