Walt Whitman Sings is A Spiritual Revival Meeting Preached, Chanted and Sung by John Slade at The Laguna Playhouse on November 21 2015 at 2:00pm.

I’m not much of a talker,” he claimed in real life, but in his poetry Walt Whitman longed to command the stage like the great actors, orators, and opera divas of his age. Near the end of his life, he told a friend, “I should have read my poems out loud, I should have reached out directly to the people!” But by then it was too late.

So now he’s back, and full of music! Whitman’s long, operatic lines are set to gospel, folk and hip-hop rhythms such as you’ve never heard them before. Now, more than ever, hear shamanic Walt “without check, with original energy,” brimming with contagious optimism and joy.

You’re with him inside a Chautauqua tent revival meeting, celebrating the miracle of life and this wonderful new experiment called America. He sings his childhood … his parents … his own real-life friends and lovers and heroes … and incredibly for the Victorian era, he sings about love “in all its triumphant intensity” … between man and woman … man and man … man and the Universe.

He relives our “beautiful, terrible” Civil War … sings “O Captain, My Captain” about the death of his beloved Mr. Lincoln.
And before he bequeaths himself to the dirt … he reminds you of what you have in common with them all … and with the commonest blade of grass.
