The City of San Clemente is having a ribbon cutting ceremony at El Portal Beach Stairs Thursday December 10 2015.

San Clemente renovated the El Portal Beach Access Stairway.

Join Councilmember Chriss Hamm at 4:00pm for the celebration.

El Portal/ Buena Vista Beach is near 1100 Buena Vista. There is limited street parking in the area. Please be respectful of area residents when parking.

The stair access located at the intersection of Buena Vista and W. El Portal was originally built in the 1970’s, had met its useful life, and needed replacement.

The City’s rehabilitation project included the removal of the existing stairs and replacement with a new timber stairway supported by concrete piles with anodized aluminum handrails and a 20 foot wide decomposed granite access way.

Improvements also include a new drainage system, a landscaped pedestrian landing at the bluff top, an ADA accessible viewing platform, and a new fence planted with Bougainvillea along the southern boundary.

The new landscaping and beautification reflects the existing landscape of the Beach Trail below, offering a dramatic new look and more pedestrian-friendly stairway linking the neighborhood at the coastal bluff to the San Clemente Beach Trail and beach below.

Additional beautification includes Spanish tile risers, some of which were provided through the CARE Program which offers opportunities for the public to donate and name public amenities.

An opportunity to provide a bench at the landing is currently available through the CARE Program.
