Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in San Clemente is closing on Monday May 30 2016.
Orange County Emergency Medical Services (OCEMS) announced all ambulance transfers will be diverted to other hospitals as of 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27th.
The City of San Clemente made a public statement about the closure.
“Despite efforts by the City to work with MemorialCare and state legislators to seek legislation to allow for a freestanding emergency room, as well as appealing to key state and county agencies to keep the hospital open, the hospital will close at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 30th.”
San Clemente Mayor Bob Baker explained: “This action by MemorialCare leaves San Clemente residents without sufficient access to emergency medical care.
The hospital has been a community institution for 44 years, seeing approximately 15,000 emergency room patients a year.
These patients will soon have to be absorbed by surrounding hospitals making the wait times in those emergency rooms longer.
As the communities around us continue to grow, we need more access to emergency care not less.
A research report titled “California Emergency Department Closures Are Associated With Increased Inpatient Mortality At Nearby Hospitals” published in Health Affairs (August 2014) indicates that mortality rates can be impacted by a hospital/ER closure.”
The City of San Clemente continues to try to find another medical provider to offer to purchase the property from MemorialCare in an attempt to preserve emergency care in San Clemente.
The San Clemente Grass Roots organization Save San Clemente Hospital President Dr. Gus Gialamas reminded the public that: “12,000 people have signed petitions to save the hospital, 4 City Councils have voted the same way, MemorialCare themselves said they wanted to maintain emergency services, yet they will close our only hospital costing lives, health care and jobs in our community.”
Saddleback Memorial stated: “It has been a privilege to serve this community at the Saddleback Memorial San Clemente campus.
We are grateful to the many dedicated physicians, employees and volunteers.”
