Laguna Art Museum Executive Director Malcolm Warner presents The 150 Year History of Cartoons about People Looking At Art.
Art museums have been a happy hunting-ground for cartoonists since the advent of illustrated newspapers and magazines inLaughter in the museum the nineteenth century.
It was a scene of people at an exhibition, published in the British magazine Punch as “Cartoon No. 1” in 1843, that gave us the term “cartoon” for this kind of comic drawing.
From Honore Daumier to Saul Steinberg and the other witty draftsmen of the New Yorker, cartoonists have found more comic potential in the museum setting than one might have thought possible.
Among the themes on which they have played endlessly ingenious variations are life imitating art (or failing to do so), the naked and the nude, aestheticism and philistinism, the absurdities of the latest style, and the high-brow as seen by low-brows and children.
By looking just a little more seriously than usual at the scenes, encounters, and conversations that they have drawn and scripted, we can all get a fresh perspective on the “museum experience.”
