The 5 Fwy Southbound at Avenida Pico in San Clemente will be experience lane reductions to allow Highway Crews to safely connect the existing southbound lanes with the newly constructed lanes and bridge over Avenida Pico.
Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) recommends taking the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner if you need to travel to the San Diego area during the Pico Switch.

Friday August 19 2016 10:00pm: 5 Fwy Southbound at Pico in San Clemente will be reduced to one lane
Saturday August 20 2016 8:30am: 5 Fwy Southbound at Pico in San Clemente will have two lanes open
Saturday August 20 2016 12:00pm: 5 Fwy Southbound at Pico in San Clemente will have all lanes open
San Clemente Hwy 5 Ramp Closures Friday August 19 2016 thru Saturday August 20 2016.
The following ramps will be closed in conjunction with the freeway lane closure:
Avenida Vista Hermosa Southbound On-Ramp
Avenida Pico Southbound Off-Ramp
Avenida Pico Southbound On-Ramp
Avenida Palizada Southbound Off-Ramp
San Clemente Hwy 5 Ramp Closures Alternative Routes
5 Fwy SOUTHBOUND OFF-RAMPS San Clemente
Motorists who want to exit southbound I-5 at Avenida Pico or Avenida Palizada will be directed to exit at Avenida Vista Hermosa.
From there, they will be able to access Avenida Pico and El Camino Real to get to Avenida Palizada.
5 Fwy SOUTHBOUND ON-RAMPS San Clemente
Motorists who wish to access southbound I-5 and Avenida Vista Hermosa or Avenida Pico will be directed south along El Camino Real to access the southbound on-ramp at Avenida Presidio.
5 Fwy in San Clemente Alternative Route
You can always exit the Fwy and head west to Pacific Coast Highway/ El Camino Real in Dana Point or San Clemente.
Please be advised that Orange County Public Works will be performing pavement work on Coast Highway from 7am to 4pm Saturday Aug 20 2016.
Coast Highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Doheny Park Road and Palisades Drive in Capo Beach.
San Clemente Avenida Pico Switch Improvements
This 5.7-mile project extends from Avenida Pico in San Clemente to San Juan Creek Road in San Juan Capistrano.
The four-year, $230 million project will:
Add a carpool lane in both directions on I-5 from Avenida Pico to San Juan Creek Road
Improve the sight distance on the southbound curve north of PCH
Reconstruct the interchange at Avenida Pico, including widening the northbound Avenida Pico on-ramp to three lanes, and providing dual left-turn lanes to both on-ramps
Add sound walls where needed
