10:00am: Charlize Theron: Evolution of a Badass – An Action Hero Career Retrospective
Actress and producer Charlize Theron reflects on portraying over two decades of action heroes, from Æon Flux to The Old Guard’s Andromache, Mad Max: Fury Road’s Furiosa to Atomic Blonde’s Lorraine Broughton. In a lengthy retrospective Q&A moderated by IGN’s Terri Schwartz, Theron discusses the evolution of the modern female action hero, the roles that inspired her and what drives her to constantly push her limits with fight training.
10:00am: “Crazy” Talk: Mental Health, Pop Culture, and the Pandemic
Can pop culture help promote mental wellness during the COVID-19 pandemic, or is that just “crazy” talk? Heather Antos (senior editor, Valiant and Image), Bryan Edward Hill (DC Comics’ Batman and The Outsiders, Netflix/DC Universe’s Titans), Joseph Illidge (executive editor, Heavy Metal, Humanoids’ MPLS Sound), and Patrick Tatopoulos (production designer, Batman v Superman, Zack Snyder’s Justice League) join forensic psychiatrists Vasilis K. Pozios, M.D., and Praveen Kambam, M.D., (Broadcast Thought, freelance contributors to The New York Times, Wired, The Hollywood Reporter) to discuss how pop culture fandom communities can help stave off social isolation and despair during this unprecedented public health crisis. The “‘Crazy’ Talk” crew will also discuss the state of mental health media representation and how a mental health/pop culture partnership can be a “win-win” for both the entertainment industry and people with mental illnesses. Moderated by attorney Jeff Trexler (The Comics Journal, The Beat).
11:00am: Decoding the Kirby/Lee Dynamic
For over half a century, the relationship between Jack Kirby and Stan Lee that resulted in the creation of the Marvel Silver Age has been one of the most contentious issues in comics scholarship, with economic and legal consequences echoing down to the present day. In this panel, two recent biographers of Stan Lee–Danny Fingeroth (A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story of Stan Lee) and Abraham Riesman (True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee) join comics historian/writer Fred Van Lente (The Comic-Book History of Comics) and playwright Crystal Skillman (King Kirby) to explore pivotal moments in Lee and Kirby’s shared history and attempt to shed more light on the complicated dynamic that produced some of the greatest characters in comics–and some of the bitterest recriminations. Rob Salkowitz (Forbes, Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture) moderates.
1:00pm: From Idea to Hired: Books, TV, Film, and Comics
Agents, managers, and book editors come together to answer questions about how to take your writing career from the blank page to sold. They’ll answer questions about writing the breakout project, getting representation, what it takes to sell a book to film, industry scoop, and more. Moderated by Nathan Bransford (author of How to Write a Novel), this year’s panel features Quressa Robinson (Nelson Literary Agency), Holly Root (Root Literary Agency), DongWon Song (Howard Morhaim Literary Agency), and Lars Theriot (Industry Entertainment).
7:00pm: 32nd Annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards
The “Oscars” of the comics industry honors comics creators and their works in 32 categories, including the Will Eisner Hall of Fame. Hosted by Phil LaMarr, the actor/voice actor/comedian known for roles in animated series including Green Lantern/John Stewart and Ed Reiss in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, Hermes Conrad in Futurama, and the title characters on both Samurai Jack and Static Shock.
