California Flex Alert Saturday July 10 2021.
California needs consumers to conserve electricity during the Heatwave hitting the Southland.
California Flex Alert Day Two: Saturday July 10 2021
Flex Alert at 4:00pm-9:00pm.
With high temperatures in the forecast, the power grid operator predicts an increase in electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use.
The temperatures are above normal for this time of year, creating an anticipated shortage in energy supply in the late afternoon hours through the evening.
Flex Alert is needed also due to a growing wildfire in Southern Oregon threatening transmission lines continue to strain the state’s electric grid.

Consumers Can Help and Conserve Energy
However, consumers can actively help by shifting energy use to morning and nighttime hours and conserving as much energy as possible during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Consumer conservation can help lower demand and avoid further actions including outages, and lessen the duration of an outage.
Energy Conservation Urged During 6:00pm-9:00pm
Consumers are urged to lower energy use during the most critical time of the day 6:00pm to 9:00pm, when temperatures remain high and solar production is falling due to the sun setting.
Extended periods of heat also can cause generator equipment failures that can lead to more serious unplanned losses of power.
If a large number of consumers do their part in small ways, conservation can make a difference.
California ISO Supports Green Energy To Avoid Flex Alerts
As California’s ability to store solar and wind energy with batteries or other technology continues to advance, crucial evening hours will be less of a challenge and similar emergencies rarer.
But for now, collective action to conserve is our most effective way to support grid reliability.

A Flex Alert is issued by the California Independent System Operator (ISO), a nonprofit, public benefit corporation that operates the high voltage grid in California and in parts of six western states.
The ISO does not own transmission lines or power plants, but does tell power plants when to generate electricity, how much to generate and where the electricity will be delivered.
The ISO is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C.
