The Laguna Beach Art Museum hosts a lecture tonight, Thursday September 25 2014 at 7:00pm. It is entitled “Surface to Light And Space” and is presented by Michael Auping . The Laguna Art Museum is located at 307 Cliff Drive.
Michael Auping, Chief Curator of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, presents a lecture about the Light and Space movement, which originated in Southern California in the 1960s. It was characterized by a focus on perceptual phenomena, such as light, volume and scale, and the use of materials such as glass, neon, fluorescent lights, resin and cast acrylic, often forming installations conditioned by the work’s surroundings. Whether by directing the flow of natural light, embedding artificial light within objects or architecture, or by playing with light through the use of transparent, translucent or reflective materials, Light and Space artists made the spectator’s experience of light and other sensory phenomena under specific conditions the focus of their work. This lecture coincides with the museum’s California Art Award being awarded to seminal Light and Space artist Peter Alexander on September 27.
Auping has been Chief Curator of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth for twenty years. A specialist in international developments in postwar art, he has organized numerous critically acclaimed exhibitions. Among them were Abstract Expressionism: The Critical Developments (1987); Philip Guston Retrospective (2003-4); Anselm Kiefer: Heaven and Earth (2005-6); Declaring Space: Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein (2008); Ed Ruscha: Road Tested (2011); and Lucian Freud Portraits (2013). Auping has also organized major exhibitions on the German artists Georg Baselitz and Gerhard Richter, and the American artists John Chamberlain, Bruce Nauman, Richard Serra, and Susan Rothenberg, among others.
In 1990 Auping was the commissioner of the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale organizing a site-specific installation by Jenny Holzer that won the Best Pavilion award. In 2007, a book of his conversations with artists, 30 Years: Conversations and Outtakes, was published by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in association with Prestel. He has contributed essays to Art in America, Artforum, and Arts Magazine and has appeared on the McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, CBS Sunday Morning, and National Public Radio.
Auping worked closely with the renowned architect Tadao Ando on the design for the galleries of the new Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, which has received international critical praise. He has also edited a revealing book of interviews between himself and Mr. Ando that took place over their seven-year collaboration.
