The San Onofre Community Engagement Panel (CEP) will hold a joint meeting with the Washington, D.C.- based Bipartisan Policy Center on Tuesday January 27 2015 at 6:00pm (pst) in San Juan Capistrano to discuss long-term storage of used nuclear fuel.
The current plan is to store nuclear waste on site indefinitely.
Storing nuclear waste near a high population density that is in a earthquake zone is illogical and very unsafe.
The meeting will be held at the San Juan Community Center located at 25925 Camino Del Avion.
The public is invited to attend this regular meeting of the CEP, which was formed to advise the co-owners of the San Onofre nuclear power plant on decommissioning the facility.
Public Comments are encouraged.

The policy center, which has held meetings throughout the country as part of its Nuclear Waste Initiative, is partnering with the CEP to discuss “American’s Nuclear Future: Taking Action to Address Nuclear Waste.”
Chris Thompson, vice president of Decommissioning for Southern California Edison (SCE), majority owner of San Onofre, said the meeting gives local communities an opportunity to push for potential solutions to the national nuclear waste storage impasse.
“We hope this joint meeting with national policy leaders will help amplify the voice of Southern California residents who want the federal government to do its job and establish a storage facility for used nuclear fuel,” Thompson said.
Presenters will include Per Peterson, professor of nuclear engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and Tim Frazier, director of the policy center’s Nuclear Waste Initiative.

SCE announced in June 2013 that it would retire San Onofre Units 2 and 3, and has begun the process of decommissioning the facility.
SCE has established core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide decommissioning.
